Welcome to the Machine

La canzone "Welcome to the Machine" dell'album Wish You Were Here è fondamentalmente della critica al mondo dell'industria musicale (tema poi ripreso nella canzone seguente dell'album, Have a Cigar) ed in generale alla società industrializzata. The Machine, cioè la Macchina, è l'industria musicale, che si nutre dei nuovi cantanti e dei gruppi per sopravvivere. Il testo descrive infatti il dialogo che avviene tra un discografico rude e arrogante ed un giovane cantante. Però è il discografico a decidere il destino del cantante, seguendo esclusivamente il criterio dell'assoluta esigenza di far soldi, vendendo il più possibile a scapito della qualità e della passione. Un'aspra critica è rivolta nel finale anche al mondo del giornalismo musicale.


I Pink Floyd attribuivano in gran parte alle pressioni dei discografici e dell'industria musicale la follia che aveva portato Barret all'autodistruzione, come spiega bene questo brano in lingua inglese: 


"This is about the money-grubbing record producers and managers controlling the band, which contributed to Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett's mental collapse. The world around him was like a machine: the fans, the group, the record industry. They told him what to do and when to do it so they would become successful.
